Hustler's Top 5 Tips for a Healthy Lawn

It’s spring, the time of year where everyone wants to be outside. Backyard BBQs, kids, and pets playing on the lawn, warm evenings on the deck - it’s a great time of year where your backyard gets put to good use!

During this time, your lawn can suffer from overuse. It can be easy to neglect your lawn or use the wrong products, resulting in a yellow, fatigued lawn. 

We’ve put together some helpful tips for a healthy lawn. 

1. Start with the right mower

There are so many lawnmowers on the market, it can be difficult to know which is correct for you and your lawn.

2. Fertilise your lawn correctly

There are many types of fertilisers on the market, so check with your local garden centre as to what type of fertiliser your lawn needs. 

We recommend that you fertilise your lawn at the very start of spring, as this is when the lawn needs a boost before the growing season is in full swing. 

Fertilise again in late autumn, before winter arrives. This will ensure that your lawn stays healthy over the cold months. 

3. Keep your lawn well hydrated

Watering your lawn is an important part of keeping it healthy. Always water early in the morning or in the evening, especially in the warmer months. This gives your lawn time to soak up the water. 

Don’t overwater, however. This can lead to increased pest infestations and can also discourage your lawn from growing. If you live in a part of Australia where rain is more frequent, only water on days when your lawn and the soil feels dry. 

4. Get on top of lawn grubs and other pests

We’ve all had them. Those pesky lawn grubs leave your lawn patchy and dry. It can be difficult to get rid of them and can mean multiple applications of pesticides. 

At the first sign of lawn grubs, spray a chemical or insecticide over your lawn. This will prevent a large-scale infestation.

5. Make sure you have the correct lawn for your area

People come in all shapes and sizes, and the same can be said for lawns. 

Different types of lawns thrive in different conditions. Some lawns need more care and maintenance than others, which means if you live in dry or harsh conditions, you want a lawn that needs less care. 

  • Zoysia lawn is great for harsher conditions and for those with a more laid-back approach to yard maintenance. 
  • Buffalo grass is also another low-maintenance lawn type and does well during warmer seasons.
  • Couch grass does well in drought conditions, which is perfect for areas of Australia that annually have less rainfall, or are in drought restrictions.
